Just Wash the Dishes!

I’m as normal as any mom, most days.  There are just a few things that make me go crazy, make my eye twitch and require a straight jacket.  One of them is how dishes are put in the dishwasher. By put in, I mean, cleaned off and put in to be washed.

I was brought up that when you put the dishes in the dishwasher, you must throughly wash and rinse the dishes off before putting them in.  This has worked well for me since I was 16 and while I lived on my own and even when I first got married.  In the past few years I have noticed that while taking the dishes out of the dishwasher, some were still dirty and had food stuck on them. I thought it was weird as we had a pretty decent dishwasher.  Then we upgraded and still had that problem.  I started noticing my hubby has been placing dishes in the dishwasher (gasp) without washing them off.  Putting them in there with crud still on the plates.

You can imagine my horror.  This is not how we do dishes.  I told him that and for about 3 weeks he protested and didn’t do dishes.  So I let the sink get very full, and I still had to do dishes. Then me, the dishwashing police made a rule, if you cook, you have to do dishes.  So hubby did dishes.  And wouldn’t you know his coffee cup came out of the dishwasher, with coffee crud still in it!

Then I find that tops and bottoms of items aren’t washed together.  I found the blender of my quick shake washed, the but top and bottom of it, not washed.  Another Tupperware container with the top washed and the bottom still in the sink.  The entire piece needs to be washed or I don’t put them away!  O’Hana!  Nothing gets left behind.  I know, a little over the top, but that is what goes on in my head.  It’s like washing one sock of a set and waiting until the next week to wash the other.

My eye should be twitching and a crink in my neck.  I showed him and told him if he didn’t start washing them properly, I was gonna “what?” he asked sarcastically.  “HIRE A MAID!” I said. Maybe that will get him to follow the dishwasher police guidelines. Time will tell.

Is it just me or do you have this problem too?

  1. Funny, my grandmother never cleaned her dishes first because she felt that there was no point to having a dishwasher if you had to clean them first. And miraculously, her dishes always came out clean from the dishwasher. I always wondered if she had a little elf in there scrubbing them, because I do not experience the same cleanliness from my dishwasher. We have to at least rinse them first or start the washer right after you put them in for it to work the way it did for her. The issue in our house is that emptying the dishwasher seems to be EVERYONE’s pet peeve, so I am typically the one who gets stuck with this job, which is also not my favorite. But I do like the look of a clean dish! :)

    • I agree. We don’t put dishes in and out of the dishwasher every day, so things get a little crusty. And I do try to wash things off or put water in the so they can soak. Putting them in or taking them out is no fun. I can’t wait until my daughter can start doing dishes. 😉 Thanks for stopping by!

  2. My long lost sister!!! I could not agree with you more… However, I do not have a dishwasher per say. (I know can you believe it?! No dishwasher in the 21st century!) But I do have to wash the dishes… I do not mind that a few dishes pile up in the sink (it is tedious to have to wash just one spoon), but what I do not mind is that they be at least rinsed or at least fill the empty bowl of cereal with water so it doesn’t stick to it! Great post!

  3. My mom and sisters agree that the dishwasher is just for sterilizing clean dishes…after they’ve already been washed! LOL I would be so frustrated in your situation!

    • We have a pot scrubber option to select too, but that doesn’t mean little men are in the scrubbing on the dishes. It just runs longer, hoping things will clean. I think we have a sanitize option too, so boiling things off too.

  4. OMG me too!!! I can’t let my husband do the dishes anymore. Drives me insane what he does. Thanks for linking up :)

  5. Atta girl! You scare him with the maid thing! And get an expensive one to scare him haha.

    • I know right! He did laundry and I’m trying not to complain, but one of my pink shirts, now has dark pink stains on it. I wonder what else is stained dark pink. lol

  6. Regina, lol – I too am a dishloading snob! Sometimes when someone else loads the washer, I sneak the dishes back out to rinse them off properly…oh my!

  7. This is so funny but true.. It happens in our household so often and hence these days I rarely use dishwasher lolz..!

Btw, thank you for stopping by my blog..Have a great rest of the week!

    • It has gotten better since I told him I wrote about it on my blog. :) I’m not sure if he read it at work or what, but he’s either washing them better or I’m doing the dishes more than him, so I don’t see so much crud on the ‘clean’ dishes. Thanks for coming by.

  8. That’s one of the reasons my ex-hubby and I got divorced! :). Men just don’t get it when it comes to household work. Or maybe they’re just playing dumb, so they won’t have to lift a finger.

    Go get that maid!

    • In all honesty, my hubby does a great job with the chores. I should not complain. he does dishes (though not my way) and laundry, helps clean the house. I just wish it was like how I do things, so we didn’t clash and I didn’t have to rewash dishes.

  9. My hubby does rinse off dishes first. His problem is that he doesn’t always rinse them right away and they sit in the sink for awhile and then you can’t get them to rinse, bleh. He also is terrible at getting everything to fit in the dishwasher. BUT I’ve refused to touch dishes for years now, so I don’t really care how he does it as long as they get clean! He’s become more diligent now that he’s the only one doing it. My evil plan worked…muhuwahaha

Thanks for stopping by the No Housework Party :)

    • yeah, I guess if I didn’t see how it did it or how many times things had to be washed, it would be great too. Hmmmm, now to get him to take over doing them… :)

  10. At our house, it finally boiled down to: one person cooks, another cleans the kitchen, and the last one puts them away. This is especially nice when my hubby kicks in because I’m usually the one who has to do two of the three items. Guess which?

As long as I don’t have to unload, I am good to go.

Plus, I am training the younger three to rinse their dishes as soon as they finish eating. That way things don’t get crusty before they go in for the night.

    • I am not a fan of unloading the dishes, but it goes so my faster than loading.

I can’t wait for the kids to get older to start taking care of the dishes!

  11. Haha- you sound exactly like my mom in law- she gets batty if the dishes are not done the right way! I am guilty of not organizing my dishwasher- when my mom in law babysits- I always come back to see it neatly arranged. You made me laugh!! Thank you:)
