Family Recipes Revealed

Growing up my mom has made fudge and other special treats for Christmas, including her fabulous pumpkin pie.  I have always enjoyed these family traditions.  Mom would sometimes make up boxes and deliver them to the neighbors as well for Christmas.

I imagined these recipes being handed down from generation to generation and that was kinda cool.  We have this old 8 inch thick cookbook from the 1950′s that was my grandma’s that talks about using lard (gasp).

So when I went to make my mom’s famous fudge and told her I couldn’t find the recipe in her recipe box, I was shocked when she told me that it was on the back of the Kraft marshmallow jar. My vision of the recipes being passed down from generation to generation were just thrown away but a simple recipe on the back of a jar.

In fact I learned that yummy pumpkin pie recipe she makes too.  Yeah. That’s on the back of the Libby can.

So thanks to Uncle Kraft and Aunt Libby for passing down your recipes to my family.  Had my mom not looked at your labels, we’d never have such great recipes to pass down to our family for future generations.

So if you want to know my families ‘secret’ recipe for pumpkin pie, pick up a can of Libby pumpkin. Her Fudge recipe is on the jar of Kraft Marshmallow.

What family recipes do you have that come from the recipe on the can/box?

  1. We don’t have any family recipes that have been passed down. That’s funny! It reminds me of the “Friends” episode when they were trying to figure out the chocolate chip cookie recipe and it ended up being a Nestle Tollhouse recipe. LOL

  3. This reminds me of that one episode in Friends where Phoebe was giving Monica her grandmother’s secret cookie recipe which turned out to be the exact recipe from Nestle Toll House! Hahaha!

My Mom loves to cook and I really should get her recipes because when she does cook something special, it’s so good!

  4. I have a feeling that my grandma’s recipes are the same. She has them all handwritten in a notebook. However, I do know that she has gotten a number of her strawberry recipes from the farm where she picks them. Does it really matter if the recipes are good? :)

    • My mom and I had a good laugh about it when I asked her and I ribbed her afterwards. It was like the mystery unvealed. Kinda like The Wizard of Oz, the answer was always at my finger tips.

  5. Isn’t it wonderful how food brings us such wonderful memories and traditions. It doesn’t matter if the recipe comes from the back of a can or is over 100 years old, as long as those recipes are shared with those we love!

  6. Awe… Man!!! Regina!!! You let the cat out of the bag! Although, I must admit, I do add a few of my own secret ingredients to both recipes. Grace, peace and many, many blessings, Carla

  7. lol, this is funny! I find a ton or recipes that are keepers straight from the food makers. Jif Peanut Butter Pie is always raved about when I make it. I am always telling them to get the recipe right off the site and I get looked at like I have two heads lol.

  8. I once had a friend who asked me for my secret fudge recipe, she was the one who originally gave it to me and it was from a magazine.

  9. My sister just typed out and bound my mom’s recipes. It was so nice to have! Who knows how many of them are off cans … : )

I’m going on the tour on Thursday also. I’m a dairy farmer and I blog at http://truthordairy.blogspot.com/ Looking forward to meeting you!
